Landscape and Heritage
Middleton Lodge Estate – comprises a number of Listed Buildings the main one of which is Middleton Lodge, described on its’ website www.middletonlodge.co.uk as being ‘…an exceptional Georgian country house set in 200 acres of private parkland’. The historic parkland lies roughly midway between Middleton Tyas (to the south) and Barton (to the north). Allowing a NEW quarry to destroy a large area of this attractive and historic parkland will be sacrilege – it should not be allowed.
To the south of the Estate lies Five Hills Round Barrows, a Scheduled Ancient Monument site. The majority of the nearby village of Middleton Tyas is covered by a Conservation Area.
The potential loss of historic parkland through the implementation of quarrying within that parkland gives cause for concern. Such parkland is part of our heritage and should not be lost. It is important to ensure that Planning Policy Guidelines are followed. Damage to the historic settings of Middleton Lodge must be avoided. Quarrying will destroy the nature of this historic estate. Pertinent sections of Planning Policy Guidance, Acts, Richmondshire District Council’s Local Plan and English Heritage guidance are detailed below. Other elements of these documents also apply.
The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 sets out the requirements for the protection of listed buildings. The Act stresses that there should be special regard for the preservation of the setting of listed buildings. A number of government planning policy statements and guidance notes seek to protect and enhance the historic environment and local distinctive character. Of relevance to the historic environment is Planning Policy Guidance: Planning and the Historic Environment (PPG15)6 which sets out government policies for environmental stewardship and states that there should be effective protection for all aspects of the historic environment. The full Act can be viewed on www.opsi.gov.uk.
