Pollution, Air Quality, Noise And Traffic
Noise
With quarrying comes NOISE – blasting, traffic movement, reversing alarms and that caused by the conveyor belt to be used to move limestone from the proposed NEW quarry at Middleton Lodge to Barton Quarry. It is not acceptable to replace the tranquillity of beautiful historic parkland with the sounds of a working quarry.See Scott Wilson’s Noise Report.
Traffic
An increase in traffic can be expected not only as a result of the proposed new visitor improvements at Middleton Lodge, but also from the NEW quarry. It is expected to attract 80000 visitors per year. Traffic will be directed onto the A1 although there will be no physical barrier to stop drivers taking a short cut through Barton or Middleton Tyas. Satellite navigation systems use the shortest route and not signposted routes. HGVs from the quarry will not, apparently, have Sherburn Stone's authority to travel through Barton or Middleton Tyas although this will require managing. It is difficult to envisage a non Sherburn Stone (or associated company) HGV following this guideline if a trip through Barton shortens the journey. Approximately 2,000,000 tonnes of Limestone is planned to be extracted which will leave the quarry by road in one form or another. If this goes out in 20 tonnes loads then this could mean circa 100,000 lorry movements – potentially an average 56 lorry movements a day for 15 years if work is restricted to winter months only. When the A1 undergoes widening or is blocked then travel for these vehicles will be difficult. There cannot be a formal HVG restriction through Barton or Middleton Tyas as this is a diversion route for the A1. Middleton Tyas has narrow roads and historically there is evidence of severe congestion. Large volumes of traffic movement through either village is not welcome.
